Why has the room under the skylight got darker?
Because the glass above it has been collecting everything the roof collects — pollen, dust, oak debris and the same organic film that greens the north side of a house.
It happens slowly enough that nobody notices the room dimming until someone finally sees the skylight from above.
The bigger problem is what sits in the flashing around it. Debris packs into the frame, holds water against the seal, and a skylight that leaks is an interior repair — ceiling, insulation and drywall — not a glass one.
It is also the single worst place on a house for a homeowner to go and look. Roof pitch, wet glass and a surface that is slick when treated is exactly how people get hurt.
We are on roofs anyway for roof cleaning, and the owner works at height for a living. Cleaning the glass and clearing the frame while we are up there is the safe version of a job people should not be doing off a ladder.
What we do
Cleaning is not the same as sealing
We clean the glass and clear what is packed around it. We are not roofers, and we do not reseal, reflash or repair a skylight.
What we will do is tell you what we saw, with a photo, so you can get it looked at before it becomes a ceiling repair. Pointing out a problem we cannot fix is worth more to you than pretending it is not there.
Worth doing with a roof clean
If the roof is being washed, the skylights are already in reach and already getting rinsed. Doing them properly at the same time costs very little extra.
On its own it is a separate trip to the roof, which is why it is cheaper as part of the same visit.

How we clean skylights
Carefully, from the roof, with the surrounding flashing cleared rather than just the glass wiped.
We look at the access first
Roof pitch, surface and condition decide whether the job is safe to do at all. If it is not, we say so rather than attempt it.
We clear the debris around it
What is packed into the flashing matters more than what is on the glass. That comes out first.
We wash the glass
Low pressure and the right solution. A skylight seal is not something to test with a pressure washer.
We rinse clean
Purified water where it matters, so the glass dries without spotting.
We check the seal and flashing
We are looking at it anyway. If something looks wrong you get a photo and a plain description of what we saw.
We check it from inside
The only view that actually matters is the one from the room below. We look before we call it done.

Questions people ask
Is it safe to walk on my roof to do this?
That depends on the roof, and we look before we commit. Pitch, surface and condition all decide it. If your roof is not safe to work on we will tell you rather than risk damaging it or getting someone hurt.
Will cleaning a skylight make it leak?
Not the way we do it. High pressure aimed at a skylight seal is how that happens, so we use low pressure and let the solution work. If a seal is already failing we will show you a photo — but we are not creating the problem.
Can you repair a skylight that is already leaking?
No. We clean glass and clear debris; we are not roofers and we do not reseal or reflash. What we can do is tell you what we saw and photograph it so a roofer knows where to look.
Should I do this at the same time as the roof?
It is cheaper that way. We are on the roof for the roof clean regardless, so the skylights are already in reach — doing them separately means a second trip up there.
